In order to insure that each film
is studied and rated on an individual basis, DWBFF has
instituted a system where entries do not compete against each
other, but instead are recognized for their own individual
merits. For all intents and purposes, they compete against themselves: each entry is judged on individual merits and scored on an inherent value system. The judges focus is on your film when it is your turn to be evaluated, not on all the other films that are in cue: this insures that they will not have comparisons going on in their minds when they should be focusing entirely on YOU. Judges score entries on a performance scale and winning entries are recognized and awarded not only for Best Of Show, but also for two Awards of Excellence levels, two Awards of Merit levels, a Kudos Endeavor Award, or no award. Best of Show honors are granted to the top scoring entry/entries for each season; Awards of Excellence are granted to entries with truly exceptional artistic and technical achievements; and Notable achievements are recognized at the Award of Merit and 'Kudos' award levels. The
number of awards granted at any given level will
fluctuate based on the total number of entries received
for each competition deadline.

Scorched Earth! Docu-drama Feature Luca Gianfrancesco November 1st 1943, in Conca della Campania, a tiny village in a south Italian province, 19 civilians are slaughtered by a Nazi patrol. Graziella Di Gasparro, daughter of one of the fallen, strenuously fought for years to keep alive the memory of that forgotten massacre. The murder of Graziella’s father was the brutal epilogue of the German occupation of that area. Graziella di Gasparro, on November 1st 2016 - after years of suffering and struggles - finally had a day of relief from her tragic family story. In fact, on the 73rd commemoration of the massacre, the German ambassador in Italy attended the institutional ceremony in order to demonstrate the commitment of German govern to reconcile the two European Countries. Luca Gianfrancesco 6ce4456c98 headshot Director, editor, producer, cameraman and photography director, Luca Gianfrancesco, in 2010 founded with other four partners the Mediacontents productions company, focalized on the pro-duction of documentaries, commercials and - more in general - of audiovisuals. In 2017 he di-rected Scorched Earth! a documentary based on the brutal and bloody epilogue of the German occupation of Italy after the September 8, 1943 armistice. |
bOObs: The War on Women's Breasts Health Megan S Smith In “bOObs,” we first learn from medical doctors about myths surrounding mammography, such as mammograms are “early detection” and “low radiation”. We hear heart-breaking stories of how this breast cancer diagnostic test helped to tragically change the lives of three female patients. Then we learn the benefits of thermography in conjunction with ultrasound, and how these two painless tests — neither containing radiation — are capable of finding cancer years before a tumor forms, while having up to twice the accuracy of some mammography machines. Finally, we hear from doctors how financial greed played a large part in sending women down this frightful path in the first place. When my husband died of lung cancer in 2007, for 6 years I festered over the way he passed until I decided to try and make a difference in the world of cancer, to help people with cancer live longer and better quality lives, and perhaps help them find a cure. And so, I took my Master of Science degree and journalism background and hit the road with a cinematographer, filming doctors, patients and decision makers all over the EU, Mexico and the US. What I discovered was both disturbing and encouraging. Currently, I'm editing a feature documentary on alternative cancer therapies, "A New Standard of Care", but felt the need to put out information on women's breast health in the meantime with the short documentary "bOObs." Hopefully, it will begin a discussion on the world of breast cancer diagnostics -- an area crying out for immediate improvement. |

Once upon a time - An old canal Wildlife/Nature/Animals Robert Henno Almost two centuries ago, a canal was dug out to allow barges to transport coal from Charleroi to Brussels. Over the years, the construction has been transformed to allow larger, faster barges to pass through. Deep trenches and sloping surfaces have replaced the meanderings and numerous locks which used to enable steep inclines to be crossed. The authorities were wise enough not to eradicate the abandoned stretches of the old canal. Very quickly, nature reclaimed its rightful place with an abundant and varied fauna and flora which colonised these segments. The film invites you to discover the richness of this biodiversity throughout the seasons. From a very early age, Robert has been passionate about wildlife films and photography. During the eighties, he set up a photography agency in Brussels, which specialised in nature and the environment. He distributed his photos, as well as those of the world’s top specialists in the field, throughout the five continents. In 2007, he sold the agency to return to fieldwork and make his ultimate dream come true: to make wildlife films. During the following years, he travelled Europe and Africa extensively and amassed enormous amounts of footage. His hunger sated, he turned towards subjects closer to home and began to tell stories with his images. His first film was released in 2016 and was very successful. His dream had come true. |

To the Brink and Back Human Spirit The Church of Almighty God Since it came to power in mainland China in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party has been relentless in its persecution of religious faith. It has frantically arrested and murdered Christians, expelled and abused missionaries operating in China, confiscated and destroyed countless copies of the Bible, sealed up and demolished church buildings, and vainly attempted to eradicate all house churches. This documentary is a recounting of the true experience of persecution at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party suffered by Chen Wenzhong, a Chinese Christian. Chen Wenzhong was successful in his career and had a beautiful and happy family, but because he believed in God and performed his duty, he became wanted by the CCP. He was forced to leave home and was on the run for over ten years. In order to learn of his whereabouts, the CCP police constantly monitored, threatened, and intimidated his family, and wouldn't even spare his young son, Xiaoyu. In the end, they forced Xiaoyu onto the path of no return. This video production was produced as a not-for-profit piece by the Church of Almighty God. The actors that appear in this production are performing on a not-for-profit basis, and have not been paid in any way. This video may not be distributed for profit to any third party, and we hope that everyone will share it and distribute it openly. When you distribute it, please note the source. Hero Dog Wildlife/Nature/Animals Vanessa Schulz One dog’s heroic act is caught on surveillance camera and the video goes viral to over a million people on YouTube. It inspires a filmmaker to travel to Chile to explore the feasibility of a search for the now infamous “hero dog.” The result is a stirring documentary and the adoption of multiple street dogs, proving that courage is contagious… and one dog can make a difference. Director Biography - Vanessa Schulz 3167452912 headshot Vanessa Schulz DIRECTOR, PRODUCER, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY, WRITER, NARRATOR, EDITOR, SOUND. A lifelong photographer, Vanessa grew up in South Africa, inspired by the natural world. After attending film school in Cape Town, she immigrated to the United States to gain further experience working as producer and cameraman for NBC, Fox, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. She was Assistant Producer on Discovery’s two-time Emmy award-winning “Wolves at our Door.” Frustrated with mainstream media’s reluctance to air contentious and truthful subject matter, Vanessa created 21st Paradigm, which became incorporated as a non-profit organization in February 2001. In addition to 24 official film festival selections, Vanessa is the recipient of twelve awards, including Best of Festival and Best Documentary awards. Her most successful film, “Cost of Freedom,” an exposé about wolf reintroduction and the gross exploitation of wildlife by powerful right-wing political factions, inspired judges at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival to create a special jury award “for a filmmaker with the courage to pursue a difficult and controversial topic.” Her films and related campaigns, in particular “Cull of the Wild: The Truth behind Trapping”, have made significant contributions in the legal struggle to protect animals. With “HERO DOG”, her seventh independent film, Vanessa continues to give voice to the animals she seeks to protect. |
The Rarest Drug on Earth Science
Amanda Verhagen An incredibly rare isotope called Actinium-225 could revolutionize the way we treat cancer. Preliminary trials have obliterated cancer in patients given only weeks to live. There's only one problem: it's almost impossible to obtain. Today, most of our global supply comes from American radioactive waste, but it's barely enough to treat a handful of patients per year. Due to this shortage, it's been impossible to do a large-scale clinical trial. A team of researchers in Vancouver is trying to change that. At TRIUMF, the world’s largest cyclotron particle accelerator, which is owned by a consortium of 20 Canadian universities - scientists are looking at a new way to make Actinium-225 using leftover particles from the accelerator. If successful, Canada could become the global supplier of a brand new, lifesaving cancer treatment. |

Patriot Acts Social Issues Feature Film James Lilly In 2008 independent journalist James Lilly took a small film crew to the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico. His goal was to document the escalating cartel wars and the increased Minuteman militia activity on the US side of the border. By 2009 he had identified Shawna Forde and her organization Minuteman American Defense as one of the most dangerous and out of control border groups in the United States. Memorial Day weekend of 2009 Shawna and her team engaged in a brutal assault on a suspected low level marijuana smuggler and his family in Arivaca, Arizona. This story is a telling of how the propaganda and rhetoric of extremism masquerading as patriotism can motivate some fringes of society to horrific acts. |
The Nature of Things episode "The Genetic Revolution" Social Issues Robin Bicknell Technologies like CRISPR are making it possible to quickly and cheaply change the DNA of all living things, including humans. Genes can be edited almost as easily as words on a computer screen. Brilliant scientists from across the globe are using these powerful new gene-editing technologies in ways once thought unimaginable. This new ability to alter our DNA holds the promise of curing disease … saving threatened species … solving the problem of world hunger … maybe even obtaining human perfection. But will the promise be fulfilled? Robin Sky Bicknell is a multi-award winning documentary director, producer, and writer. She is currently living in Toronto Canada and her family is from Louisiana and Indiana in the United States. Top broadcasters she has worked with include Discovery, BBC, Channel 4, A&E, History, PBS, Science Channel, MTV, Channel 5, TLC, Discovery Health, Discovery ID, Canal-Vie, Discovery Europe, Slice Network, W Network, Smithsonian Channel and Global Television. Currently Bicknell is directing and producing Black Watch Snipers – a feature film about five snipers who survived WWII when most of their regiment was killed. Recently she completed Camp X: Secret Agent School – the breakthrough feature film about a top secret WWII spy training camp that was the genesis for the CIA. As well, Bicknell directed, produced and wrote The Curse of the Axe – a groundbreaking feature length documentary about an incredible pre-contact Huron village found near Toronto, and a mysterious axe buried ceremoniously at its center. The film garnered the Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival. She also recently completed the second season of the popular series Surviving Evil – a true crime docudrama that re-enacts the first person accounts of women who survived harrowing attacks. Bicknell directed, produced and co-wrote the feature length film The Real Superhumans and the Quest for the Future Fantastic - which garnered the prestigious 2008 Banff Television Award for Best Canadian Program. She also directed, produced and wrote a feature length documentary entitled The Body Machine which was nominated for the Best Popular Science Documentary Rockie at the 2009 Banff International Television Festival, and she received a Best Science Documentary Gemini nomination. She has also been nominated for a Best Director Gemini for a documentary entitled Roswell: The Truth. She specializes in doing high-end pop science, deep access, and human stories. She is also accomplished at dramatic recreations for docudramas. Recent projects include four times Gemini nominated The Plastic Fantastic Brain - a two part series about neuro-plasticity, The Need for Speed - an inside look at the subculture of illegal street racing, A Time to Live - the journey of four children with terminal cancer, Tall Ship Chronicles – chronicling the voyage of a group of sail trainees on their voyage around the world, Modern Love – profiling couples with “alternative” ways of expressing love, My Fabulous Gay Wedding starring Scott Thompson of Kids in the Hall fame, and Chicago Film festival’s gold winner for Best Documentary Series, Forensic Factor - demystifying the latest innovations in forensic science. |
